Columbia, South Carolina, United States Integer Technologies LLC Full time

Company Overview

Integer Technologies LLC is a pioneering research and development firm, driven by a team of dedicated scientists and engineers focused on technological advancements and national security. We engage in cutting-edge research and development for next-generation systems and technologies, catering to the Department of Defense (DoD) and various U.S. Government entities, transforming innovative research into significant products for both military and commercial use. Our primary research areas encompass power and energy systems, unmanned systems (particularly in maritime applications), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Our portfolio in power and energy systems plays a crucial role in supporting the DoD's initiatives for platform electrification, including naval vessels. Our research encompasses hybrid and electric propulsion systems, extensive energy storage solutions, power conversion technologies, autonomy, digital twins, and the integration of mission systems to ensure rapid and reliable responses from power systems.

Position Summary

The role of the Electrical Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer demands a robust foundation in real-time simulation of electrical power systems, power converters, electric machines, and control systems. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the multi-domain physics associated with power system components and will be adept at maintaining virtual models of physical systems for applications such as health monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and advanced control strategies. The Electrical HIL Engineer will be skilled in identifying key features and dynamic behaviors of physical systems across electrical, thermal, and mechanical domains, and will be proficient in developing accurate computer models that encapsulate the relevant dynamics and critical behaviors.

A successful applicant will have experience with controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL), where a physical power system's controller executes control application code in tandem with a real-time power system model. Additionally, candidates should have experience in power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing, where actual power hardware is evaluated at full-scale power and voltage levels by interfacing with the simulator through power amplifiers.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth, staying at the forefront of technological advancements. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential. This position may involve collaboration with clients whose requirements are often evolving and challenging to articulate; therefore, effective communication skills are highly valued.

Integer Technologies LLC is dedicated to solving complex challenges that currently lack established solutions. To meet both internal and client project objectives, all candidates must be capable of conducting research, assimilating new concepts from various engineering disciplines on advanced topics, and documenting findings in an accessible manner for non-experts.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proven expertise in at least one computer modeling and simulation environment (preferably MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).
  • Demonstrated understanding of HIL challenges, including coordinating communication protocols, identifying amplifier bandwidth, and minimizing latency.
  • Mastery of at least one real-time computer modeling and simulation environment such as RTDS, Opal-RT, or Speedgoat.
  • Experience with controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) where a physical power system's controller executes control application code alongside a real-time power system model.
  • Experience with power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing involving real power hardware at full-scale power and voltage levels.
  • Experience testing power equipment such as converters, generators, motors, and batteries using power hardware-in-the-loop.
