Position Overview:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) plays a vital role in delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients within a behavioral health setting.

As a CNS, you will oversee the treatment and services provided by LPNs, CNAs, and other healthcare professionals on your designated unit and shift.

You will be responsible for creating, executing, and assessing individualized care plans tailored to each patient's needs.

Your role includes evaluating both physical and psychological health requirements, developing nursing care strategies, maintaining accurate medical documentation, and educating patients and their families about various health conditions while prioritizing patient safety.


  • Continuously assess and document the patient's condition and relevant information.
  • Ensure that nursing care plans are tailored to the assessed needs, with an initial treatment plan established upon admission.
  • Accurately take and document physician's orders, ensuring clarity and compliance with established protocols.
  • Administer medications as prescribed, maintaining precise records of controlled substances, and adjust medications under the supervision of a healthcare provider as necessary.
  • Supervise the self-administration of medications, employing safety measures to confirm patient identity and documenting the effects of both scheduled and PRN medications.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (including nurses, therapists, program managers, and physicians) regarding patient care. Participate actively in unit activities such as therapy sessions, family discussions, staffing, and unit meetings.

  • Provide education to patients, families, and colleagues about medication management, potential side effects, patient rights, and other relevant topics to ensure optimal care.
  • Ensure thorough and accurate documentation for all patients during each shift, completing patient assignment sheets daily and fulfilling assigned tasks.
  • Deliver comprehensive reports to incoming staff, supervisors, and physicians.
  • Hold a degree from an accredited nursing program.
  • Preferably possess one or more years of nursing experience in the relevant clinical area.
  • Experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, or addiction recovery settings is preferred.
Certification in Psychiatric Nursing is advantageous.

  • CPR and de-escalation and restraint certifications are required (training is provided upon hire).
  • First aid certification may be necessary based on state or facility regulations.
