Embedded Counselor

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Embedded Counselor to join our team at the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. As an Embedded Counselor, you will play a critical role in providing direct clinical and educational services to cadets, while also providing consultation and training opportunities for the Commandant Staff, Residential Wellbeing Coordinators, and ROTC faculty and staff.

• Provide direct clinical services to undergraduate cadets, including initial consultation and assessment, crisis interventions as needed, individual and group counseling, psychiatric referrals, and drop-in office hours.
• Consult with faculty, advisors, and staff regarding cadet mental health concerns.
• Participate in orientation for new cadets and new cadet week training, educational programming and outreach events, and other collaborations as determined.
• Work closely with a multidisciplinary staff of counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, psychiatry residents, and practicum students to deliver services that maintain the highest standards of professional and ethical care.

• A master's degree in counseling or social work, plus two years of experience, or a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-approved program with an APA-approved internship.
• Be licensed eligible as a licensed professional counselor, licensed social worker, or licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions with a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience and interest in collaboration with residence life, academic departments, faculty, and staff.
• Training and experience in delivering culturally competent interventions.

• Prior military experience and/or experience working in a military training environment such as a senior military college.
• Experience working with undergraduate students.
• Experience in outreach and educational programming, e.g., suicide prevention gate-keeper programs.
• Previous training and/or experience in a college mental health setting.
• Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and disposition planning to address safety risks.
• Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills.
• A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice.
• The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues with acceptance, respect, and trust.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
