Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Maintenance Worker to join our team at the County of Champaign Forest Preserve. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of labor-related tasks to maintain and upkeep the district's grounds, buildings, user areas, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect and maintain preserve restrooms, including daily cleaning and trash removal
  • Lock and unlock rental facilities, set up for events, and ensure facilities are clean and equipped for rental functions
  • Assist visitors with general questions and provide excellent customer service
  • Gather, load, and haul refuse and vegetation from grounds and user areas
  • Maintain preserve vegetation through mowing, edging, aerating, fertilizing, tree and shrub trimming, planting, pruning, and weed control
  • Assist with general road repairs, including asphalt patching and gravel road maintenance
  • Inspect, repair, and paint park and playground equipment
  • Identify and report hazards and unsafe conditions, making necessary repairs or modifications
  • Maintain and service equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation
Requirements
  • Illinois Driver's License
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions
  • Experience with or ability to learn the use and maintenance of tools of the trade, both powered and non-powered
  • Good communication skills and ability to maintain good working relationships with supervisors, team members, volunteers, and the public
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, exercise judgment, and identify or solve problems as they arise
  • Ability to maintain composure and self-control in difficult situations
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate District vehicles and/or equipment
Work Environment and Physical Demands

This position requires working primarily outdoors under various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or wind. Duties will be performed in close proximity to the general public, and the employee may have frequent interactions with patrons. The employee may be exposed to hazardous flora and fauna, chemicals, and machinery with moving mechanical parts and high noise levels.

The normal duties of this position include stooping, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Prolonged standing or walking on unpaved/uneven terrain will be frequent. The employee may regularly handle, grasp, or feel objects; reach, push, or pull to reposition items; and may regularly lift up to 50 pounds to shoulder height or above and up to 100 pounds to carrying height. Ability to talk and hear or otherwise effectively communicate with staff and patrons is required. Visual acuity necessary for this position includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Use of personal protective equipment will be required based on job-specific tasks, including work boots, protective gloves, safety goggles or glasses, chaps, earplugs or ear covers, reflective vest or hi-vis shirt, respirators or masks, and helmets or hard hats.
