Heavy Equipment Operator

Under the direction of the Highway Yard Foreman or his agents, the Heavy Equipment Operator/Public Works Laborer will operate various motorized equipment, including sweepers, trucks, snow fighters, front-end loaders, and backhoes, in a safe and proper manner to perform assigned work. The successful candidate will also be responsible for loading and unloading trucks, picking up and hauling materials, plowing and sanding highways, and performing minor maintenance tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
• Operate heavy equipment, including sweepers, trucks, snow fighters, front-end loaders, and backhoes, in a safe and proper manner
• Load and unload trucks, pick up and haul materials, plow and sand highways
• Perform minor maintenance tasks, including greasing, oiling, and cleaning equipment
• Assist with unskilled labor duties, such as digging holes, trenches, and other excavations, shoveling materials, and leveling areas
• Operate jackhammers and compaction equipment, load and unload materials, empty barrels, and clean litter and debris from streets, runways, and parking lots
• Mow grass, trim shrubs and small trees using hand or powered equipment, remove snow and ice using manual or small powered equipment, and spread sand on icy areas
• Use small hand tools, such as shovels, picks, axes, saws, heavy wrenches, and small power tools
Requirements:
• Ability to receive and interpret written and verbal instructions from supervisors and give written and verbal reports to supervisors
• Ability to use tools of trade in a workmanlike manner
• Valid Class B Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license with a CDL
• Valid Hoist Engineer Class 2B License or obtain within 120 days of appointment
• Safe driving record, subject to yearly Motor Vehicle Record/Driver's License check
• Good health and ability to perform hard physical work in extreme weather conditions
• Proven history of dependability due to nature of work
• Ability to pass a practical test
• Computer literacy, knowledge, and skills to use a computer, tablet, and other related technology, or willingness to train on technology to be used in the performance of the job
Work Environment:
The work requires agility and physical strength, ability to function in close quarters, and is subject to outside environmental conditions, including wet, hot, and cold weather. The worker is subject to noise, vibrations, hazards, and atmospheric conditions, including fumes, dust, and air contaminants. The work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving in, about, or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period.

The employee is frequently required to bend, crawl, sit, talk, move about, hear, and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions as a regular part of the job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and greater than 50 pounds using appropriate equipment.
