WHAT IS THE SMALL BUSINESS SELF EMPLOYEDDIVISION?

This division focuses on assisting small business owners and self-employed individuals in navigating their tax obligations.

The following are the responsibilities associated with this role at the full working level. If selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn and receive training to perform these duties effectively.

  • Addresses taxpayer inquiries regarding the preparation of various tax documents, related schedules, and additional paperwork; resolves account inquiries, informs taxpayers of enforcement actions, and manages sensitive case issues requiring special handling. The incumbent communicates both orally and in writing with taxpayers and their representatives in English and Spanish.
  • Evaluates and resolves tax processing issues. Adjusts taxpayer accounts, prepares and issues manual refunds, performs multiple credit transfers, and calculates tax, penalties, and interest (including restricted interest).
  • Ensures payment of overdue taxes and filing of late returns. Recommends lien or levy actions and initiates necessary documentation for release.
  • May act as a technical advisor, on-the-job coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer. Provides technical support on systemic issues and inconsistencies in the Internal Revenue Manual (IRM).

Qualifications

Federal experience is not mandatory. Experience may be gained in the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate employment dates and hours worked per week on your resume.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement OR time of referral:

Specialized Experience/ Education GS-05:

Applicants must meet one of the following: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying experience include experience performing various tasks involving researching and processing financial documents, reviewing information, and determining corrective action on accounts.

OR

You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: A Bachelor's degree or four years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited institution.

OR

Have a combination of education and experience equivalent to one year of specialized experience.

Specialized Experience GS-06:

Applicants must have: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that demonstrates the ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of this position.

Specialized Experience GS-07:

Applicants must have: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is defined as experience related to the work of this position and has provided you with the competencies necessary for successful job performance.

AND

You must meet the following special requirement:

THIS IS A BILINGUAL POSITION. Applicants will be required to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish. You must be able to speak, read, and write the selected language to be considered proficient.
