Phlebotomy Technician

Overview:
The Phlebotomy Technician is accountable for executing all responsibilities associated with phlebotomy, which includes the collection, receipt, and referral of specimens.
Key Responsibilities:

- Ensures that the organization’s philosophy and core values are reflected in the services provided to clients.
- Takes initiative for personal development and ongoing education.
- Guarantees the quality of work performed by all team members and coordinates services to ensure customer satisfaction while maintaining cost-effective operations.
- Ensures adherence to CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, infection control, safety, and other regulatory standards, including the privacy and security of health information (PHI).
- Keeps the collection tray/container/bag and work area in a clean and sanitary state, restocking supplies as needed.
- Responsible for the procurement of departmental supplies in collaboration with the team lead.
- Conducts all phlebotomy duties, including specimen collection, receipt, and dispatch.
- Prepares specimens for external laboratory referrals, which involves ordering miscellaneous tests, packaging specimens, arranging transportation, and managing referral documentation.
- Performs all patient specimen collections, including venipuncture, capillary collection, urine drug screening, skin tests, and cultures.
- Ensures that specimen requirements are fulfilled at the time of collection to maintain specimen integrity.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging competently with customers, patients, family members, nurses, physicians, clients, and colleagues.
- Utilizes the laboratory information system to document specimen details, patient registration, order entry, collection lists, and other assigned tasks.
- Completes additional duties as assigned (stand-by/on-call, inventory management, special projects, cross-training, etc.).
- Conducts associate performance evaluations and annual competency assessments promptly.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory, or Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy is preferred.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, data entry, and organizational skills is essential.
- One year of phlebotomy experience is preferred.
- Certification from a Nationally Accredited Program is preferred.
