Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Building Inspector to join our team at the City of Sarasota. As a Building Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring that new construction and additions, renovations or alterations to existing buildings and structures comply with local building codes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct technical inspections of buildings during construction, alterations, and repairs to ensure code compliance.
  • Check each project for defects and conformity with approved plans, issuing notices for correction when necessary.
  • Collaborate with contractors and owners to address changes needed to bring projects into compliance with code requirements.
  • Perform final inspections of buildings and authorize issuance of Certificates of Occupancy for projects completed in conformity with codes and regulations.
  • Maintain records and receive inspection requests, preparing and submitting reports of buildings found to be in unsound structural condition or in violation of building codes.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, explaining and interpreting standard codes.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent with four years of experience in construction, or equivalent education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to secure a provisional license within three months of employment and a state certificate within one year.
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Driver's License.
Competencies
  • Thorough knowledge of modern building construction practices, methods, and materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of local building codes.
  • Ability to understand and interpret building codes, plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees, contractors, architects, engineers, public officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to enforce building codes and ordinances with firmness, impartiality, and tact.
Working Conditions

This position requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Work involves considerable physical activity, including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing, and crouching. The incumbent is subject to inside and outside activities with various weather changes or atmospheric conditions.

Public Contact

This position requires constant public contact with contractors and the general public, acting as a City and Department representative.
