Job Overview:

The Field Service Engineer plays a crucial role in supporting the project execution team for microgrid and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This position involves collaborating with project engineers to devise effective execution strategies, alongside participating in factory assessments and system activation tasks. The role also encompasses the development and execution of proactive services tailored to meet customer needs. Furthermore, it includes coordinating investigations into customer-reported issues and aiding in achieving fair resolutions for clients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a commitment to safety in all operations.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment issues at client locations.
  • Engage actively in product/system factory assessments (FAT).
  • Conduct start-up and commissioning services at client sites (SAT).
  • Support the internal system engineering team in product development and project initiatives, providing insights based on field experience to enhance product offerings.
  • Facilitate customer training sessions both at the company and client facilities.
  • Travel extensively across North America.
  • Serve as the technical lead for projects, preparing and approving design deliverables, while ensuring compliance with quality standards.
  • Assist in designing systems that align with functional specifications.
  • Possess knowledge in civil, structural, and electromechanical disciplines as an advantage.
  • Familiarity with inverter-based control theory and SCADA systems is preferred.
  • Assist with quotations, engineering inquiries, and product team support to create comprehensive responses to customer requests.
  • Develop and implement strategies for risk and opportunity management within your responsibilities.
  • Identify and mitigate contract risks, taking corrective actions to resolve any issues related to contracts, quality, programs, or costs.
  • Report unresolved issues to management with recommendations for resolution.
  • Collaborate with customers to shape and deliver effective solutions, seeking feedback to drive improvements.
  • Participate in project meetings, presenting specific aspects of engineering tasks.
  • Work closely with the Supply Chain function to ensure technical requirements for equipment or services are clearly communicated and agreed upon with suppliers.
  • Evaluate supplier proposals for technical fit and accept equipment or services as appropriate.
  • Share application knowledge internally and support customer training, testing, and troubleshooting of microgrid and BESS applications as necessary.
  • Review, develop, and document quality standards, processes, tools, and techniques.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with safety regulations and contractual obligations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in engineering processes and tools.
  • Embody Hitachi Energy's core values of safety and integrity, taking responsibility for actions while caring for colleagues and the business.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering with relevant experience in power generation control systems, power systems engineering, power electronics, and/or energy storage system design; OR
  • Master's Degree in engineering focusing on power generation control systems, power systems engineering, power electronics, and/or energy storage system design.
  • Demonstrated capability in diverse engineering subjects.
  • High technical aptitude in electrical engineering and industrial software technologies.
  • Solid knowledge and experience in industrial, power generation, or distribution environments.
  • Experience in SCADA system design is advantageous.
  • Experience in engineering and/or commissioning of power electronics devices, including energy storage and/or solar inverters.
  • Knowledge of distribution system design and engineering, including distribution-level interconnection.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy generation technologies as well as thermal generation (diesel generators, CHP, small turbines).
  • Ability to understand power automation and/or power generation systems.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills, adapting to team dynamics and fostering team spirit.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Build effective relationships with customers and colleagues, establishing a broad network of contacts.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Exhibit strong time management, coordination, accuracy, and attention to detail, especially in high-pressure environments.
  • Must possess work authorization that allows employment with Hitachi Energy in the United States.
