Position Summary:
The Orthodontic Assistant plays a vital role in supporting orthodontists during various dental procedures. This position involves preparing treatment areas, ensuring patient comfort, and assisting with clinical tasks. Key responsibilities include sterilizing dental instruments, taking radiographs, and providing patients with post-treatment care instructions.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in orthodontics is preferred.
- Certification in Dental Assisting is advantageous.
- X-ray certification is beneficial.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the orthodontist during various treatment procedures, including the placement of orthodontic brackets.
- Bond composite materials to teeth for aligner attachments.
- Collect initial records, including study models, panoramic X-rays, cephalometric images, and digital photographs.
- Perform bonding, adjustments, retainer checks, and debanding as permitted by state regulations.
- Accurately bend and coordinate arch wires, following state guidelines.
- Remove fixed bands and brackets, as allowed by state regulations.
- Fit headgear and provide instructions as permitted by state guidelines.
- Conduct ligature and wire removal and replacement.
- Size, fit, and cement orthodontic bands.
- Take impressions and prepare models for appliances.
- Manage lab work, including shipping, receiving, and storing retainers and study models.
- Duplicate records for patient transfers.
- Capture quality intraoral and extraoral photographs.
- Prepare patients for treatment and take dental radiographs as necessary.
- Serve as an infection control officer, developing protocols and ensuring the sterilization of instruments and equipment.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding treatment progress and care instructions.
- Assist in the removal and placement of arch wires and prepare teeth for bonding.
- Ensure patient comfort throughout the treatment process.
- Maintain clinical supply inventory and stock operatories as needed.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Capability to lift and move equipment as necessary.
- Manual dexterity for handling dental instruments.
Work Environment:
The Orthodontic Assistant will primarily operate in a dental office, interacting with patients, orthodontists, and other dental professionals. Adherence to safety protocols is crucial, especially when working with X-ray equipment.
