Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Lab Scientist Job Description

UPMC is seeking highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Lab Scientists to join their team of dedicated laboratory professionals. These roles are generalist opportunities that will support and rotate through all areas of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and STAT laboratory analytical methods with precision and accuracy.
  • Work with and under Medical Lab Scientist's supervision to achieve accurate clinical testing.
  • Interact with laboratory customers professionally and respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to all established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis and enter accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests and perform High Complexity testing with the oversight of a Medical Lab Scientist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Perform and document Quality Control according to established protocols.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training and perform minor repairs.
  • Use reagents and supplies cost-effectively and monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.

Requirements:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician: Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1-year's experience in a hospital laboratory.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.
