POSITION OVERVIEW

This is a full-time position with a schedule of 4 weeks onboard followed by 4 weeks off. We are seeking to fill the role of Chief Engineer.

The Chief Engineer is accountable for the upkeep, functionality, and repair of all vessel systems. On larger vessels, the Chief Engineer oversees the Assistant Engineer. This role reports directly to the Master of the vessel and assists in enforcing all company policies and procedures.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from a Maritime Engineering School in good standing and/or possession of a Designated Duty Engineer License, or equivalent, is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as an Engineer on similar-sized passenger vessels is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of diesel propulsion, electrical generating systems, fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Strong time management skills: capable of managing multiple tasks, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, making quick and sound decisions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and SharePoint.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Ensure the vessel is always ready for operation.
  • Manage the potable water and auto chlorination systems.
  • Oversee black water/gray water/waste tanks, treatment, and testing programs.
  • Monitor and ensure the resolution of all deficiencies noted in the Cabin Maintenance Notebook.
  • Supervise all fuel, oil, and potable water bunkering operations, ensuring safety and environmental compliance.
  • Oversee and maintain vessel systems, including engineering, deck, and hotel department preventative maintenance programs on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis with the support of the Assistant Engineer.
  • Actively participate in drydocking, shipyard repairs, and maintenance periods.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Directly supervise the Assistant Engineer (if applicable).
  • Monitor and evaluate work performance throughout the year and conduct written performance reviews.
  • Train all new and relief Chief Engineers and Assistant Engineers.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Maintain vessel maintenance records, inventories, and voyage status reports. Propose maintenance and repair projects.
  • Assist in developing the annual shipyard budget and manage projects within the established budget.
  • Keep log sheets for all equipment.
  • Oversee all accounting reports, inventory, and requisitions related to equipment maintenance.

Safety and Security:

  • Adhere to company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures, seeking supervisory assistance when necessary.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure crew compliance with regulations regarding safe vessel operation.
  • Prepare the vessel for all U.S. Coast Guard annual drydocks and other inspections.
  • Participate in both shore-side and onboard training as required by the company.
  • Stay familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System, including Emergency Response Activities.

Communication Skills:

The Chief Engineer will engage with passengers daily and must maintain a professional and approachable demeanor at all times. Must be capable of interpreting maritime technical literature and governmental regulations, as well as articulating and documenting technical information clearly and accurately.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Living Conditions: Crew members reside in close quarters, with 4 to 8 crew per room depending on the vessel. Private rooms are not available due to limited accommodations.
  • Chief Engineer Work Shift: Must be physically capable of working 12 hours per day, 7 days a week for 4 to 8 weeks at a time. Off-vessel rotations typically last 2-4 weeks. During shipyard periods, work hours are assigned by the vessel Master, usually Monday to Friday.
  • Mobility: Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, crawling, and pushing/pulling are required. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs and ladders, sometimes while carrying tools or equipment. Ability to stand or sit for extended periods is necessary.
  • Handling/Strength: Must be able to handle, lift, and lower objects weighing up to 50 pounds from ground/deck level to a height of 4 to 6 feet, and repeat these movements. Ability to carry these objects up to 100 feet continuously for 20 minutes is required.
  • Environmental Conditions: Must be able to work in all weather conditions, around loud noises, in confined spaces, and fit through a 28-inch wide hatch.

COMPENSATION

  • Summer season pay ranges from $415 to $487 per day, depending on vessel placement.
