Manager of Electrical Engineering

San Francisco, California, United States Astranis Full time

Manager of Electrical Engineering - Digital Hardware Development
Astranis is dedicated to closing the digital gap by connecting the billions of individuals globally who currently lack internet connectivity.

We are achieving this by creating the next generation of compact, cost-efficient spacecraft designed to bring the world online.

Our team has successfully launched multiple satellites into orbit, secured numerous commercial agreements exceeding $1 billion in revenue, raised substantial funding from leading global investors, and built a team of over 300 exceptional engineers.

Our operations are based in a historic office in San Francisco, previously utilized for shipbuilding during significant global conflicts.

Our satellites, which function from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh merely 400 kg and employ a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite has the capacity to connect over two million individuals, and we are eager about the positive impact we will soon have in various regions.

Supported by significant funding and a dedicated, collaborative team, we provide a fulfilling work environment where you will learn and make a meaningful contribution, regardless of your career stage.

Key Responsibilities:
As an Engineering Manager, you will oversee the delivery of our custom Software Defined Radios. In your leadership role, you will manage the complete hardware development lifecycle: from architecture definition to board design, testing, and qualification.

Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for an individual who has managed and executed the entire design cycle of FPGA-based software-defined radios for GEO space telecommunications satellites.

A proven track record of delivering custom-designed hardware that encompasses the full spectrum of signal chain design, integration of FPGAs with high-speed data converters, and custom power and clocking solutions.

Experience in the design and analysis of payloads for satellite communications, including understanding radiation effects within FPGA-based systems or other complex digital devices.

A history of leading small teams, mentoring staff, possessing strong communication skills, and the ability to make impactful decisions in uncertain situations.

Role Overview:
Lead and cultivate a team of electrical engineers to design groundbreaking software-defined radios capable of executing complex signal processing algorithms in space.

Oversee and manage design workflows for intricate PCBAs that integrate computing, high-speed I/O, data converters, and power distribution.

Architect ultra high-speed mixed-signal systems to create the most efficient and adaptable communications payloads, integrating them with the spacecraft.

Ensure competitiveness through ongoing technical innovation and industry expertise.

Qualifications:
A B.S. or higher in electrical or computer engineering, or a related technical field.
8+ years of professional experience in mixed-signal and high-speed digital hardware design, including FPGAs, high-speed data converters, SerDes, and high-speed serial links.
8+ years of PCB-level experience in designing hardware from concept to production (including schematic capture, layout, bring-up, and characterization).
Demonstrated leadership through project management, mentorship, and team management experience.
A passion for hardware development, including experience in a fast-paced environment and hands-on design.

Preferred Qualifications:

A strong background in mixed-signal system performance measurement, design validation, and debugging (including EVM testing, spur analysis, and multi-carrier measurements).

Experience simulating high-speed digital protocols using tools such as Ansys SIwave, Keysight ADS, or similar software.

Familiarity with Altium or similar EDA tools for high-density PCB design.

A solid understanding of digital communications theory and measurement of radio nonidealities.

What We Offer:
All positions come with a compensation package that includes equity and comprehensive benefits.

Base pay is just one component of Astranis's total rewards package, which may also include equity in the form of incentive stock options, high-quality company-subsidized healthcare, disability and life insurance benefits, flexible PTO, 401(K) retirement plans, and complimentary on-site meals.

Astranis's pay ranges are informed by professional-grade salary surveys and compensation data sources.

The actual base salary offered to a successful candidate will be influenced by various factors, including experience, credentials, educational attainment, skill level requirements, and the level and scope of the position.

U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Residency, or Refugee/Asylee Status Required.

Our mission and products aim to connect the world and everyone in it, regardless of gender, race, creed, or any other distinction.

We believe in a diverse and inclusive workplace and encourage all individuals to join our team and contribute their unique perspectives to strengthen our organization.
