Job Summary

The Agricultural Research Service is seeking a highly qualified Veterinary Research Scientist to serve as the Research Leader for the Virus and Prion Research Unit located at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa.

The selected candidate will provide leadership and guidance for conducting research in a multidisciplinary program of applied and fundamental research on viral and bacterial diseases of swine and prion diseases of ruminants and wildlife.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, direct, and conduct research whose objectives include identifying pathogenesis of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, swine influenza virus, porcine circovirus 2, coronaviruses (e.g., Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus) and emerging viral diseases of swine, wildlife, and other species.
  • Develop methods of modulation of innate and adaptive immune responses to swine viral pathogenesis of viral diseases.
  • Identify transmission, genetic, and pathogenic mechanisms of the organisms associated with porcine respiratory disease complex, focusing on bacterial pathogens and their interactions with each other and swine viruses.
  • Identify potential candidates for novel diagnostic assays, vaccines, and biotherapeutics for pathogens associated with Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex.
  • Investigate emerging and potential zoonotic bacterial pathogens that impact swine industry and design measures to diagnose, prevent, control, and eliminate the threat posed.
  • Investigate the pathobiology of atypical Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) in natural hosts, including the pathobiology of atypical scrapie and atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).
  • Investigate horizontal transmission of TSEs, particularly the horizontal transmission of sheep scrapie in the absence of lambing, determining routes of transmission in Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).
  • Investigate determinants of CWD persistence by determining the host range of CWD using natural routes of transmission and investigating the pathobiology of CWD.
  • Respond to emerging disease conditions such as SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) as they arise, including livestock susceptibility, transmission, reservoir potential, pathogenesis, and potential vaccines and therapies.

Supervisory Duties

  • Provide vision, establish an advisory stakeholder base, and develop research programs to address stakeholder priorities.
  • Exercise leadership and supervise personnel assigned to the unit.
  • Maximize the creativity and productivity of the unit.
  • Hire personnel and manage the human, fiscal, and physical resources assigned to the unit.
  • Serve as the unit fundholder.
  • Provide technical information and consultation both internal and external to Agricultural Research Service.
  • Ensure the proper interpretation and reporting of scientific research results.

Requirements

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Qualification Requirements

The selected candidate must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA).

Applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements, including specialized experience and supervisory/managerial competencies.

Specialized Experience

The selected candidate must have 1-year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-14 grade level are: planning and conducting independent research related to viral or bacterial diseases of swine or prion diseases of ruminants, wildlife, and other species; publishing related research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; being invited to present research findings at scientific conferences, either in person or virtually; experience supervising staff to accomplish a variety of research objectives; and working with stakeholders to enhance research efforts or writing grant proposals to expand existing programs.

Supervisory/Managerial Competencies

The selected candidate must demonstrate the ability to lead and accomplish work through others, communicate with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds, and experience supervising staff to accomplish research objectives.

Additional Requirements

The selected candidate must be available to report for duty at the time a selection is made and undergo a pre-employment check and full background investigation.
