Overview of the Trauma/Surgical ICU
The Trauma/Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a 28-bed critical care unit specializing in the care of traumatically injured patients or those undergoing complex surgeries requiring close monitoring and care. Patients are admitted directly from the ED, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners, resident physicians, and attending trauma surgeons. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Critical Care Technician will assist with patients' activities of daily living and plan of care. This includes:
- Supporting the activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport.
- Performing technical duties as directed by RN, such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, Foley catheter care specific to the population served, and documenting appropriately.
- Identifying and communicating changes in patient status to RN and responding appropriately.
- Reinforcing education of patient and family/responsible party regarding individual care needs and safety issues.
- Participating in Cooper patient satisfaction initiatives and goals.
- Participating in the performance improvement activities.
- Assisting in orientation of new hires.
- Completing annual unit-specific competencies by the specified due date.
- Attending Staff Meetings when available for document review of staff meeting minutes.
- Assisting in admission, transfers, and discharges of patients to and from the unit.
Requirements
We are looking for individuals with an active EMT certification.
Experience and Education
0-2 years of experience preferred.
License/Certification Requirements
Qualifications/Certifications:
- Successful completion of an unlicensed healthcare provider/technician program.
- Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited RN program.
- 1 year or more patient care experience in a similar role.
At least one of the above qualifications/certifications must be met for hire.
AHA Basic Life Support certification is required.
Skills:
- Communication – Ability to communicate with patients, visitors, and coworkers.
- Successful phlebotomy/EKG competency must be completed during orientation.
Work Schedule
Full-time days, 36 hours a week.
Hours: 7a-7p.
