Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our team at BLaST Intermediate Unit #17. The successful candidate will assist students with visual impairments to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe and efficient travel within the home, school, and community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the referral and assessment process of visually impaired students
  • Conduct evaluations of the orientation and mobility needs of visually impaired students, including concept development, orientation to the environment, and techniques of effective and safe travel
  • Develop and implement instructional plans based on identified student needs
  • Provide direct O&M instructional services to students with visual impairments and consultation with school staff, peers, and community
  • Order, distribute, and maintain canes and low-vision devices related to travel
  • Use ongoing, criterion-based assessment to monitor and report on the progress of students receiving instruction
  • Consult with staff, other professionals, and parents regarding orientation and mobility programs, individual student needs, and individual student progress
  • Conduct in-service programs for staff, families, or communities
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility
  • Current certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) with the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports and professional correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of staff, teachers, parents, and the general public
Working Conditions

The work environment is typically moderate to loud, with frequent interaction with students, parents, and other professional staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and achievement of students. Driving is required, and the employee must be able to maintain a vehicle and appropriate licenses to drive.
