Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Scientist to join our team in the Biological Threat Emergency Response (BTER) Group. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing critical laboratory testing and analysis to support public health emergency response efforts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accomplish accessioning and processing of human clinical specimens and environmental samples in biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) laboratories.
  • Perform testing and documentation of analyses performed, including quality assurance and quality control procedures.
  • Prepare testing reagents, troubleshoot and/or maintain equipment, and assist with development, validation, and implementation of new methods.
  • Packaging and shipping of infectious materials.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for emergency response testing of potentially hazardous materials.
Requirements
  • Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements for a testing personnel in a high complexity-testing laboratory as defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and protocols.
  • Knowledge of microbiological, molecular biology, or medical sciences.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures.
  • Effective and professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to work weekends, after-hours, and on-call coverage.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a biosafety level three (BSL-3) environment.
  • Experience working with Select Agents.
  • Experience performing Polymerase Chain Reaction (Standard and Real-Time) testing.
  • Experience performing conventional microbiological procedures.
  • Experience performing immunoassays.
  • Experience with computer interfaced instrumentation.
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Experience with operating and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation.
