The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Scientist to join our team in the Biological Threat Emergency Response (BTER) Group. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing critical laboratory testing and analysis to support public health emergency response efforts.
Key Responsibilities- Accomplish accessioning and processing of human clinical specimens and environmental samples in biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) laboratories.
- Perform testing and documentation of analyses performed, including quality assurance and quality control procedures.
- Prepare testing reagents, troubleshoot and/or maintain equipment, and assist with development, validation, and implementation of new methods.
- Packaging and shipping of infectious materials.
- Participate in on-call rotation for emergency response testing of potentially hazardous materials.
- Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements for a testing personnel in a high complexity-testing laboratory as defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and protocols.
- Knowledge of microbiological, molecular biology, or medical sciences.
- Knowledge of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures.
- Effective and professional oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt in a fast-paced work environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment and independently.
- Ability to work weekends, after-hours, and on-call coverage.
- Experience working in a biosafety level three (BSL-3) environment.
- Experience working with Select Agents.
- Experience performing Polymerase Chain Reaction (Standard and Real-Time) testing.
- Experience performing conventional microbiological procedures.
- Experience performing immunoassays.
- Experience with computer interfaced instrumentation.
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Experience with operating and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation.
