ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Outpatient Registered Nurse (RN) CAP 1 serves as an entry-level position within the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This role is essential for delivering and coordinating high-quality patient care, which includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a designated group of patients. The RN may delegate appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff, including RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As a vital member of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, the RN will engage in decision-making, educational initiatives, leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts aimed at enhancing patient care outcomes and operational efficiency.

KEY DUTIES:

All responsibilities must be executed in alignment with Fresenius Kidney Care policies, procedures, and nursing standards, as well as state and federal regulations.

  • Carry out essential functions under the supervision of the Team Leader, with support from Clinical Educators or in collaboration with fellow Registered Nurses.
  • Conduct systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatment for assigned patients, documenting findings in the medical record and making necessary adjustments to treatment plans.
  • Evaluate and document the educational needs of patients and families to provide ongoing education.
  • Collaborate with patient care staff to ensure the safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy.
  • Administer prescribed medications and document their effectiveness.
  • Initiate emergency response protocols as required.
  • Act as a resource for the healthcare team and assist in training new staff.
  • Ensure proper laboratory procedures are followed and reschedule any missed collections.
  • Work with the Interdisciplinary Team to identify expected outcomes and update care plans accordingly.
  • Educate patients about transplant and treatment options.
  • Complete CAP requirements for career advancement.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

  • This role involves direct patient care, which may require heavy lifting and assistance with patient mobility.
  • Frequent periods of standing and bending are necessary.
  • Occasional movement of equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. may be required.
  • The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
  • Exposure to infectious materials may occur.
  • Daily tasks include desk work, computer usage, and interaction with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Travel to training sites or other facilities may be necessary.
  • Employees must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, with accommodations considered as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversight of Patient Care Technicians/LPNs/LVNs/RNs may be assigned as a Team Leader or designated Nurse in Charge, contingent upon:

  • Successful completion of all required education and training.
  • A minimum of 9 months of RN experience.
  • A minimum of 3 months of experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis as an RN.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current or successful completion of CPR BLS Certification.
  • Compliance with practice requirements in the state of employment.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Entry-level position for RNs with less than 1 year of Nephrology Nursing experience in the past two years.
  • Preferred minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Preferred experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis.
