Position Overview:
Deliver manual machining assistance for power generation apparatus in the Central Repair Facility.
Offer mechanical upkeep support to ensure the functionality of equipment in an electrical generation facility; may assume Head Mechanic responsibilities in the absence of the Head Mechanic.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify safety risks and adhere to safety protocols for personal safety, the safety of colleagues, and public safety.
- Familiar with environmental regulations and effectively apply them in all work scenarios.
- Capable of operating manual lathes with a 138" swing, manual boring mills with a 17' swing, and large manual horizontal boring machines.
- Install, maintain, test, inspect, and repair equipment at generating stations, including boilers, turbines, pumps, condensers, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels.
- Replace components such as bearings, packing in pumps and valves, shaft seals, sleeves, seats, and other miscellaneous parts utilized in plant machinery.
- Collaborate with apprentice mechanics and skill enhancement personnel to instruct on the proper and safe use of tools and maintenance techniques.
- Employees must arrange their own transportation to the work site and may be reassigned to different locations at the Company's discretion.
- Machine Shop and Power Plant setting.
- Power Plant Environment—Work both indoors and outdoors in various temperatures and weather conditions, following Heat Stress protocols.
- Operate around large rotating machinery, energized electrical systems in high noise areas, and/or in confined spaces, at heights exceeding 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or more. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.
- Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callouts 24/7.
- Ability to function in mentally demanding environments: must be able to react to crises requiring immediate action to mitigate potentially harmful or hazardous situations.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment such as boots, respirators, goggles, and safety glasses.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics, and grammar.
- Journey-level mechanical aptitude and sufficient industrial mechanical maintenance experience (minimum of 3 years in an apprentice program or equivalent training) in the repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of related power plant or machine shop equipment, including inspection and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, fabrication, and diagnostics.
- 5 years of machinist experience required.
- Experience with large lathes, mills, vertical boring machines, and horizontal boring machines.
- Strong mathematical skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Possess necessary skills and adequate industrial mechanical maintenance experience in the repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of related power plant or machine shop equipment, including inspection and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, fabrication, and diagnostics.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficient in using hand tools (e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, sledgehammers, etc.).
- Ability to operate company vehicles and equipment (e.g., forklift, mobile crane, etc.) and maintain necessary operating licenses and certifications. A valid state Driver's License is required.
- Knowledge of rotating equipment and general industrial maintenance practices and procedures.
- Ability to operate oxygen and acetylene torches.
- Ability to use machine shop equipment (i.e., drill presses, lathes, and boring mills).
- Ability to follow, interpret, and act on written and verbal job instructions, reports, technical manuals, and data.
- Ability to utilize basic math and geometry.
- Ability to use measuring instruments such as micrometers.
- Ability to perform calculations for measurements and computations necessary for the repair and maintenance of power plant equipment.
- Ability to use a personal computer and associated software.
- Ability to implement Tag Out/Lock Out procedures as per NRG guidelines.
- Ability to diagnose and rectify mechanical equipment issues and recommend major repairs.
- Ability to execute preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on mechanical equipment.
- Ability to perform plumbing and pipe fitting duties.
- Ability to set up rigging for the installation and removal of equipment.
- Ability to procure appropriate materials for job completion.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of work performed.
- Ability to routinely clean the work area.
- Ability to qualify as a "code" welder with appropriate training.
- Ability to utilize gases and/or arc welding equipment for mechanical repair and fabrication of plant equipment.
- Ability to remove and replace insulating materials with proper training.
Physical Requirements:
- Daily work expectations require the ability to perform tasks involving walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in positions above and below head and extended from the body to complete repairs.
- Lift, carry, position, and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledgehammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
- Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
- Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
- Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (refer to the waste management guidance manual).
- Ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
- Ability to distinguish assorted colors.
