General Overview and Classification Standards

This position is responsible for managing, directing, and coordinating the operations and maintenance of fleet vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: team development, ensuring environmental compliance, managing work requests, conducting diagnostic tests on vehicles, overseeing vendor management tasks, training staff, maintaining certification for all personnel, orienting new hires, reporting, and managing departmental equipment.

Supervision Received

General direction is provided, focusing on end results and typically collaborative in nature. The role involves making decisions on technical issues, diagnostics, or procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees staff; effectively recommends personnel actions related to selection, disciplinary procedures, performance evaluations, leave of absence, grievances, work schedules, and assignments while administering personnel and related procedures. Explains and interprets regulations and procedures, coordinating and directing work schedules and systems.
  • Assists with complex repairs; troubleshoots and supervises intricate repairs with junior employees; may perform repairs as necessary.
  • Addresses complex issues related to fleet management.
  • Analyzes operational needs; reviews, evaluates, and compiles reports regarding staffing requirements, equipment availability, vehicle downtime, productivity, and service levels that affect work measures and standards; assesses future equipment needs, including the development of vehicle specifications.
  • Ensures adherence to local, state, and federal environmental compliance policies.

Decision-Making Authority

Responsible for making purchasing or resource allocation decisions within organizational guidelines. Establishes work methods, timelines, performance standards, etc., and applies organizational policies.

Leadership Responsibilities

Holds formal supervisory authority over a work group (typically at least 4-5 employees), including discipline, performance management, scheduling, training, etc.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
