About the Position

This part-time temporary position with the Department of University Housing is designed to assist skilled trade and maintenance workers with the installation, maintenance, and repair of machinery, electrical, and/or electronic components found within Housing facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Transfer tools, parts, equipment, and supplies to and from work stations and other areas.
  • Assist or perform maintenance tasks such as painting, plumbing, electrical, and AC equipment change out as needed.
  • Assist or perform preventative maintenance tasks, such as AC equipment cleaning and filter changes, drain maintenance, and fire extinguisher or emergency light inspections.
  • Escort contractors and outside vendors to specific work areas.
  • Keep all work areas clean. Remove trash and debris associated with all day-to-day tasks.
  • Notify supervisor of all work completed so that work orders can be created and/or closed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills to include proficiency with email correspondence.
  • Sufficient verbal communication skills needed to exchange effectively with supervisors, staff, and residents.
  • Must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis at the University of Georgia when classes are in session.
  • Must be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct and University Housing.
  • May not exceed 20 hours of work per week across all student staff positions if positions are held in multiple departments.
Working Conditions

The maintenance assistant will independently perform intermediate-level maintenance tasks. Knowledge of standard concepts and practices of the maintenance field and be relied upon to plan and accomplish goals. Knowledge of workplace rules and guidelines; stay in compliance with UGA policies and procedures. Properly prioritize work load according to urgency. Communicate in a professional and consistent manner with a variety of individuals such as building service workers, residence hall staff, students/families, and other maintenance workers.

Physical Demands
  • Climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolds; may work from a ladder or scaffold.
  • Bend at the waist and the knees.
  • Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
  • Use hand tools and power tools.
  • Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
  • Crawl to complete various tasks.
  • May occasionally perform work-related duties outdoors, in hot or cold weather conditions.
  • Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.
