Job Summary:

As a Medical Assistant at Yale New Haven Health, you will play a vital role in providing clinical and operational support services to facilitate patient care and provide efficient patient flow. You will assist administrative, nursing, and medical staff by performing a variety of duties, including coordinating all patient care activities and direct patient support.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional patient care and support, ensuring a safe and professional working environment.
  • Assist with procedures, collect and label specimens, and deliver them to the laboratory or blood bank as needed.
  • Document all medical instructions, treatments, prescriptions, and telephone calls in the electronic medical record, with date and signature.
  • Serve as a resource to unit staff regarding protocol requirements and sequencing for lab tests and X-ray procedures.
  • Enter all incoming and outgoing lab work/results, record all in-house laboratory results, and keep current lab reports filed in the electronic medical record.
  • Escorts patients to and from exam and/or treatment areas, rest rooms, and assists patients with urinals, bedpans, or incontinent pads.
  • Maintain equipment, clean and disinfect equipment and exam rooms according to policy and procedure, and notify the engineering department of equipment defects or damage.
  • Maintain inventory in exam rooms, laboratory, and other clinical areas, order, enter appropriate charges, and store all supplies for the cancer center.
  • Respond to patient telephone calls, providing information and instructions as necessary and/or as ordered by the physician.
  • Assist office staff with scheduling and confirming appointments, as well as performing other clerical duties.
  • Contribute to meeting the fluctuating staffing needs of the cancer center by being flexible in own assignments and work schedules when required.
  • Respond to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and clinical policies and procedures.
  • Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development as outlined in performance review.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Enrollment in or completion of an accredited medical assistant training program. Knowledge of general medical terminology required. BLS required.

EXPERIENCE
1-2 years related experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinic setting preferred; phlebotomy skills preferred; computer experience required.

LICENSURE

Current Medical Assistant Certification (American Association of Medical Assistants or National Healthcareer Association preferred) or completion within 1 year of hire.


SPECIAL SKILLS

Must possess good computer skills; must be highly organized and self-motivated; must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to take direction from several individuals, evaluate and prioritize duties, work responsibly and independently.
