Civil Engineering Internship Opportunity

Job Summary
As a Civil Engineering Intern, you will assist with various engineering tasks and assignments, including preparing for and conducting field inspections, data reduction, reporting, engineering analyses, and design. Work is performed under the direction of a Project Engineer or higher who makes assignments, provides guidance, and reviews work to ensure that it is completed according to instructions and in accordance with accepted principles and practices of civil engineering. Key responsibilities include:
  • Perform inspections under the direction of higher-level engineers.
  • Prepare reports, studies, and related documents.
  • Participate in technical review meetings with engineering and planning staff.
  • Review engineering plans, reports, studies, and related documents.

Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in the English language. You should also be able to define problems, collect/interpret data, evaluate facts, draw valid conclusions, and effectively communicate findings/results. Additionally, you should have strong organizational skills with the ability to manage tasks efficiently and effectively. The ideal candidate will have higher-level mathematics, including trigonometry, algebra, geometry, and calculus, and its application to surveying and engineering computations. 0-4 years of relevant experience is preferred. You should also possess knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the field of engineering and the ability to keep current with new developments. Proficient in technical writing and basic computer functions (Microsoft Office, etc.) is required. You should be a self-starter and able to work as independently as possible. Current medical certifications including bloodborne pathogens, first aid, CPR, and emergency oxygen administration if performing fieldwork are also required. Preferred qualifications include a curriculum focus in structural or geotechnical engineering, AutoCAD proficiency, and engineering software experience.

Work Environment
The duties of this position require the intern to regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. This position may require the employee to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While in the field, the intern may be required to walk in rugged conditions, work in adverse weather conditions, and stand up to eight hours or more at a time.
