Position Overview:
The Staff Accountant will be responsible for preparing and overseeing financial documentation to monitor the organization's assets, liabilities, income and expenses, tax obligations, and other financial activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Core Duties:
- Ensure accurate and updated client ledgers by recording payments to their respective matters. Verify that payments are allocated to the correct invoices for both fees and costs.
- Detect and resolve discrepancies in accounting records, investigating and correcting errors through communication with clients, vendors, and internal departments.
- Manage daily bank deposits and reconcile those deposits on a daily basis.
- Facilitate fund transfers between bank accounts as necessary.
- Address inquiries from clients, attorneys, and staff regarding accounts receivable and trust balances.
- Issue checks upon request.
- Prepare general ledger entries and maintain supporting documentation and files.
- Conduct monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts.
- Generate reports on client trust accounts, accounts receivable, and client payments.
- Assist the Director of Finance and CFO in the preparation of monthly financial reports.
- Cross-train on various functions within the department.
- Foster positive relationships with internal and external clients, consistently delivering courteous service in a timely and efficient manner, recognizing the importance of each request.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all Firm and client business matters.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team member with a flexible and positive work ethic, demonstrating a commitment to exceeding expectations. Additionally, the following qualifications are required:
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- A comprehensive understanding of fundamental accounting principles and their practical application.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to minimize errors and identify issues promptly.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and organize workflow, with a proactive approach to meeting deadlines.
- A proactive mindset, continuously seeking to improve workflows for efficiency and accuracy through analysis of current procedures and technology.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for successful interactions with coworkers, vendors, and clients.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Advanced Excel skills.
- Experience with Aderant Expert software or similar legal financial and practice management systems is preferred but not mandatory.
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business is required.
- Hybrid: 4 days in the office, 1 day remote work.
- Experience in a law firm is essential.
