Job Summary

Columbia University's Department of Neurology is seeking a part-time Respiratory Therapist to join our multi-disciplinary clinic care team at the Eleanor & Lou Gehrig ALS Center.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform pulmonary function testing, including vital capacity, peak cough flow, and negative inspiratory force, and check vital signs such as O2 saturation, respiratory rate, heart rate, and end tidal CO2.
  • Discuss results with the clinic physician and/or nurse practitioner to determine patient's need for respiratory therapy and/or durable medical equipment (DME).
  • Teach patients and caregivers about the use of DME, including invasive and non-invasive ventilators, cough assist, and suction devices, and discuss other respiratory issues unrelated to DME.
  • Document the respiratory assessment within the patient's medical record.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
  • Current Respiratory Therapist certification/registration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Participation in the medical surveillance program, including wearing an N-95 respirator and contact with patients and potential bloodborne pathogen exposure.
