Job Title: Respiratory Therapist 2

Job Summary:

The Department of Respiratory Therapy at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a skilled Respiratory Therapist 2 to provide high-quality respiratory care to patients. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing respiratory care under the direction of a physician, conducting ventilator management, and drawing and analyzing blood for arterial blood gases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide respiratory care for patients under the direction of a physician.
  • Conduct ventilator management and ensure proper functioning of respiratory equipment.
  • Draw and analyze blood for arterial blood gases to monitor patient respiratory status.
  • Record the respiratory status of all patients and make entries in patient's electronic medical record.
  • Assist physicians in ventilating patients who cannot sustain their own respiratory function during cardio-respiratory arrests.
  • Respond to all cardiac arrests and rapid response calls, including high-risk deliveries.
  • Provide sputum induction, administer Nitric Oxide Therapy, and explain the use of respiratory care devices to patients and/or family members.
  • Clean and decontaminate equipment once removed from patient use and provide chest physio-therapy and assist in pulmonary lavage/suctioning.

Requirements:

  • Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy or graduate of a 2-year AMA-approved Respiratory Therapy program.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) certification.
  • New York State Respiratory Therapist Licensure.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification to be obtained within 1 year of employment.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification required to work in the NICU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification.
