Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled School Health Assistant to join our team at DuPage County ROE. The successful candidate will provide support to the school nurse and building principal in conducting the school health program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Check children with complaints and take temperatures, examine skin, and observe conditions.
  • Report serious accidents or unusual symptoms to the nurse and seek direction as necessary.
  • Receive, monitor, or make phone calls related to student absences.
  • Carry out first-aid as per recommended procedures and remain with the student until they leave the building.
  • Keep a record of all children seen and care given.
  • Prepare and distribute required school accident reports.
  • Assist the nurse in preparing materials and forms and carrying out special health programs.
  • Assist the nurse in identifying health concerns.
  • Transcribe health data onto individual pupil cumulative health records.
  • Assist the nurse in collecting and recording health office statistics.
  • Begins new Health Records and Cumulative Record Sheets for all pupils new to the school.
  • Discuss activities, observations, and findings regularly with the school nurse.
  • Keep current files and health records.
  • Follow up on delinquent physical, dental, vision, and hearing examinations and incomplete immunization information as directed by the school nurse.
  • Assist in vision and hearing screening programs as directed by the school nurse.
  • Type student health-related materials.
  • Perform health procedures as instructed by parents and Certified School Nurse.
Requirements
  • Must have LPN or CNA certification.
  • Current First Aid Certification.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Typing/word processing skills.
  • Certified for vision and hearing screening preferred.
  • Thirty hours of college, preferably, some health classes desired.
Working Conditions

The School Health Assistant will work in a school setting and will be required to move and lift materials, supplies, and equipment. The position requires good listening and speaking skills, as well as the ability to work as a member of a health services team in cooperation with the school nurse and building principal.

Reports to

The School Health Assistant will report to the building principal and certified school nurse.

Job Goal

To assist the building principal and the school nurse in conducting the school health program.

Performance Responsibilities

The School Health Assistant will be responsible for checking children with complaints, reporting serious accidents or unusual symptoms, receiving and monitoring phone calls related to student absences, and carrying out first-aid procedures. The position also requires keeping records, preparing reports, and assisting the nurse in special health programs.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is determined by the school calendar with compensation as established by the Board of Education.

Evaluation

Performance is evaluated by the school principal in consultation with the school nurse.
