Job Summary

The Histotechnologist Surgical Pathology Full-Time Days position at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare is responsible for performing routine histology procedures resulting in stained slides for microscopic review and diagnosis by the pathologist. This role requires effective communication with pathologists, residents, and coordinators regarding specimen problems. The Histotechnologist Surgical Pathology Full-Time Days position is also required to participate in the laboratory occurrence management program.

Key Responsibilities:

• Performs cassette-log reconciliation and initiates appropriate programs on conventional and microwave tissue processors.
• Recognizes, resolves, and documents standard processor alarms, and embeds biopsy, routine surgical, and autopsy tissues per SOP.
• Determines appropriate block orientation and alignment, knife angles, and settings to obtain representative sections, and recognizes acceptable vs. unacceptable sections.
• Operates automated instrumentation to stain and coverslip microscopic slides, and performs manual methods during instrument downtimes.
• Labels slides, collates with paperwork, and submits to appropriate pathologist or resident, and documents appropriate tracking information.

Additional Functions:

• Performs other duties as assigned, and assists in specific process improvement projects, and will assist with problem resolution regarding patient specimens including root cause analysis.
