Unit Highlights: 9A Surgical Care

- Patient Demographics: This unit caters to individuals requiring medical-surgical interventions, typically for patients aged 17 and older.
- Nurse-Patient Ratio: 1:5 (occasionally 1:6)
- Department Culture: The 9A unit is characterized by a dynamic environment, managing patients with complex medical needs. Our nursing staff collaborates closely with healthcare providers, families, therapists, and pharmacists to ensure safe and effective care. The emphasis on teamwork and communication is pivotal to our success, with leadership dedicated to fostering individual growth and engagement.
- Common Nursing Skills/Equipment: Proficient in nursing assessments, medication administration, interdisciplinary collaboration, and effective communication of patient care requirements. Hands-on skills include IV insertion, foley catheter placement, tracheostomy management, fluid and medication administration via pumps, tube feeding, wound care, and ostomy management. BLS certification is required within 30 days of hire.
When the unit reaches full capacity, LPNs will collaborate with RNs managing higher acuity patients or those with heavier workloads. In instances where the Unit Nurse Leader (UNL) is present, LPNs will assist with their patient responsibilities. LPN duties may encompass administering oral medications, IV piggyback medications, tracheostomy care, dressing changes, and documentation of assessments and care plans following the RN's initial assessment.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Illinois and Basic Life Support (BLS)

Key Responsibilities:
- Administer all medications and manage IV piggybacks and fluids, excluding IV push medications.
- Document assessments for assigned patients, following the RN's initial charting.
- Maintain care plans initiated by RNs, with the possibility of RNs opening new plans as necessary.
- Engage with physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to receive orders and coordinate patient care.
- Perform dressing changes as required.
- Conduct tracheostomy care as needed.
- Insert and manage NG tubes and associated feedings.
- Care for and change ostomy bags.
- Provide reinforcement of education and discharge instructions.
