Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor or Site Manager, the Float Medical Assistant at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian engages in a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to support patient care activities, ensuring efficient patient flow and ongoing communication within the healthcare team, referring physician offices, and organizational staff.

The Float Medical Assistant embodies a work ethic that aligns with the mission, vision, and values of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. This role involves participation in continuous quality improvement initiatives and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of departmental standard operating procedures, including the operation of specialized equipment, quality control standards, and preventive maintenance protocols.

Key Responsibilities


• Welcomes and assists multiple patients, ensuring timely service:

  • Utilizes a positive verbal tone while interacting with patients and customers in person or via telephone.
  • Manages phone calls, schedules appointments, and addresses front-office duties as necessary.


• Under the direction of the Site Supervisor or Site Manager, the Float Medical Assistant will:

  • Guide patients to examination rooms.
  • Support the RN by collecting, recording, and reporting patient-specific data, including vital signs.
  • Collect and manage laboratory specimens as instructed, adhering to established protocols.
  • Clarify all instructions to ensure patient care is executed without delay or confusion.
  • Promptly report any unusual observations or changes in patient condition or behavior.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and procedures, following orders as directed.
  • Ensure that patient care is delivered and that the unit is maintained in compliance with professional regulatory standards.


• Coordinate patient flow to ensure timely care delivery.


• Complete unit tasks such as cleaning examination areas, sanitizing equipment, disposing of waste, and running errands.


• Restock supplies in treatment rooms, maintaining appropriate inventory levels, and notify relevant staff when supplies need to be ordered.


• Prioritize workload and complete all assignments promptly.


• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population as outlined in the job description and competencies.


• The position may require local travel between various organizational locations. (Mileage compensation will be provided)


• Participation in meetings outside of standard business hours may be required. Working evenings, weekends, and holidays will be necessary based on business needs (Compensation will be awarded per hours worked according to wage and hour laws).


• Perform other duties as assigned.

MA Float

The MA Float performs all duties of a Medical Assistant as outlined above. Additionally, the MA Float will travel between HMG locations based on business needs and must be adaptable to schedule changes.

Education, Training, and Experience

Required:

Medical Assistant


• High school diploma or equivalent


• Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent work experience


• Minimum one (1) year of prior medical back-office experience, preferably within an acute healthcare system environment

Preferred:


• Associate or Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field

Skills or Other Qualifications

Required:


• Excellent communication skills; customer-focused; strong attention to detail; ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.


• Basic keyboarding skills at 35 WPM.


• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.


• Proven ability to interface with all customer levels (physicians, organizational staff, insurance companies, patients, and family members).


• Basic knowledge of medical terminology

Preferred:


• Qualified bilingual or multilingual candidates

License and Certifications

Required:


• BLS certification

Preferred:


• A Certified Medical Assistant or a valid current Limited Phlebotomy Certification.
