Overview:

The Pharmacy Supervisor oversees the pharmacy operations, services, and staff assigned to the community setting. This role is crucial in developing, executing, and sustaining effective systems and workflows. The supervisor ensures that all expenditures, including labor, pharmaceuticals, supplies, and other costs, remain within the established budget. This position also encompasses the responsibilities of a managing pharmacist, adhering to all federal and state regulations as well as accreditation and certification standards. Additionally, the supervisor performs all duties associated with a clinical community pharmacist.

Key Responsibilities:

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Oversees pharmacy personnel, including staff, students, and residents, which involves recruitment, orientation, training, performance evaluations, and development. Acts as a resource for the pharmacy team in delivering pharmacy services. Collaborates with pharmacy leadership to establish performance benchmarks and foster staff engagement. Evaluates staff performance and provides constructive feedback.
  • Implements efficient operational workflows by developing standard procedures. Assigns tasks for daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities to ensure compliance with established protocols. Ensures processes are in place for payment collection and pharmacy claims reconciliation.
  • Assists in formulating the pharmacy budget. Reviews monthly financial and human resource reports, explaining any variances to supervisors and pharmacy leadership. Continuously monitors pharmacy operations for adherence to the annual budget and strategic objectives.
  • Promotes a positive image of the pharmacy, ensuring high standards of confidentiality in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Maintains customer service levels to meet organizational goals and guarantees the quality of pharmacy services. Handles service recovery and conflict resolution as necessary.
  • Contributes to minimizing medication errors by completing Near Miss and Occurrence reports. Reviews medication event reports to identify and implement opportunities for process improvements.
  • Regularly assesses the security of medication storage areas and compliance with established policies, procedures, and legal requirements. Maintains quality control procedures and manages the disposal of unusable medications and hazardous waste. Issues controlled substances and maintains accurate records as mandated by law and pharmacy policies.
  • Manages inventory levels of medications and supplies, ensuring proper rotation and timely disposal of expired stock.
  • Performs clinical pharmacist duties, including verifying medication orders, dispensing medications, consulting with patients, and compounding as per pharmacy policies and regulations. Leads the pharmacy in identifying medication therapy management opportunities and provides education on immunizations as appropriate.
  • Establishes and nurtures positive working relationships with site leadership and prescribers. Serves as a resource for nurses and other healthcare providers regarding medication information and education.
  • Handles after-hours calls for the pharmacy, responding to security alarms.
  • Mentors pharmacy students and residents as applicable.
  • Maintains a state of alertness and safety in all activities.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Pharmacy degree (Pharm.D; Bachelor of Pharmacy) from an accredited institution.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of one year of relevant experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive movements.
  • Frequent use of vision for near and far distances, as well as color differentiation.
  • Regular use of hearing and speech for effective communication.
  • Frequent keyboard use and data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, and twisting.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling of objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing activities.
