Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Specialist to join our team at the Texas Department of Transportation. As a key member of our Transportation Operations Office, you will play a critical role in overseeing the development of plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic and highway safety construction projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the administration of contracts for the installation and maintenance of traffic systems and data collection devices.
  • Contribute to project design, including design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts, and typical sections.
  • Coordinate traffic studies, analyze traffic data, and prepare plan layouts for traffic projects, including signs, signals, illumination devices, and traffic data collection devices.
  • Inspect construction methods, workmanship, and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Prepare and monitor contracts for inspections performed by consultants.
  • Review and oversee plan packages submitted by consultants.
  • Review and revise plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, roadway illumination, traffic management systems, or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
  • Review construction records, inspection reports, and records audits to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Transportation Specialist I: 2 years of experience in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, or bridge inspection.
  • Transportation Specialist II: 4 years of experience in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, or bridge inspection.
  • Valid driver's license.
Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Required to wear protective gear, including a respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 pounds at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 pounds.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand.
  • Close Visual Acuity: Work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity: Determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.
  • Visual Acuity: Operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
Conditions of Employment
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
