Job Overview

The Telecommunications Field Service Technician plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional service to our customers and communities. This position involves the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of various telecommunication systems and equipment, including but not limited to telephony, video services, FTTx, internet, and wireless solutions, all performed in accordance with company policies and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties encompass a broad spectrum of operational areas and technical expertise:

  1. Implement new broadband services, including video, wireless, internet, DSL, telephony, and FTTx.
  2. Address service requests for troubleshooting, upgrades, removals, or modifications to customer broadband services.
  3. Ensure daily closure of all assigned service orders and troubleshooting tasks.
  4. Install essential components such as ONTs, jacks, pedestals, terminals, splitters, taps, protectors, and grounding systems.
  5. Maintain accurate inventory records for technician-utilized items.
  6. Keep detailed timesheets, vehicle logs, and records of company-issued equipment.
  7. Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on equipment, including batteries and alarms, while adhering to site log procedures.
  8. Locate and mark fiber, coax, and telephone cable routes.
  9. Perform splicing and repairs on telecommunication cables.
  10. Climb poles and towers for installation or repair of telecommunication lines.
  11. Utilize testing devices to troubleshoot and diagnose issues with telecommunication cables.
  12. Where applicable, replace Cable Television (CATV) headend equipment.
  13. Conduct troubleshooting from the customer premises to the headend.
  14. Install, test, maintain, and repair advanced telecommunication services.
  15. Oversee the installation and maintenance of Central Office equipment from various manufacturers.
  16. Understand the fundamentals of Wide Area Network equipment and Fiber Optic systems.
  17. Familiarity with computer network protocols and equipment.
  18. Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes and trenchers as required.
  19. Manage the installation and maintenance of radio systems where applicable.
  20. Complete necessary reports and logs as required.
  21. Respond to ASR's and coordinate the Engineering, Installation, and Provisioning of basic equipment.
  22. Recognize the contributions of all departments to organizational success and direct customers to the appropriate resources.
  23. Perform lead technician duties, including mentoring and assisting less experienced technicians.
  24. Execute additional responsibilities as assigned.
  25. Document accurate as-built information of the company's infrastructure.
Skills and Qualifications

  1. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a professional demeanor.
  2. Proficiency in computer programs, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  3. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently.
  4. Adaptability to change and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  5. Knowledge of compliance with Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) regulations.
  6. Flexibility in work scheduling to meet customer needs.
  7. Basic report writing and correspondence skills.
  8. Analytical skills to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
  9. Competence in using hand tools and test equipment.
  10. Basic mathematical skills and understanding of technical specifications.
  11. Experience with various testing devices to troubleshoot effectively.
Physical Requirements

This position requires:

  • Frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Occasional climbing, crawling, and squatting.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 100 lbs.
  • Working in various outdoor climates and terrains.
