Job Summary

The HVAC Mechanic role at SSI involves installing, servicing, and repairing environmental-control systems in office buildings and other industrial areas. This position requires a strong understanding of HVAC equipment and controls maintenance, as well as excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Test thermostats and controls to ensure temperatures and timer functions are set correctly
  • Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring
  • Mount compressor and condenser units on platforms or floor, using hand tools
  • Fabricate, assemble, or install ductwork and chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment
  • Cut and bend tubing, threads pipe, and joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units
  • Install expansion and discharge valves
  • Check electrical system and connections
  • Check blowers and blades for proper airflow and for vibration
  • Lubricate motors, bearings, and moving parts; replace as needed
  • Connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels, and connect control panels to power source
  • Install/replace air and water filters, clean drain pans and drain lines to avoid overflows
  • May inject small amounts of refrigerant into compressor to test systems and add freon gas to build up operating pressure
  • Clean condenser and evaporator coils
  • Replace worn pulleys and belts
  • Inspect ducts for mold, dust, and debris
  • Check and adjust humidity levels
  • Troubleshoot and correct all equipment failures
  • Track all failures and PM records in CMMS and on paper logs
  • Other general maintenance, housekeeping, plumbing, and electrical duties as required
  • Any and all other duties assigned by your Supervisor/Manager/Lead

Requirements
  • Three to five years' experience in HVAC equipment and controls maintenance. Repair in an industrial/commercial environment is preferred.
  • Must have good communication skills, have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Ability to read blueprints, building plans and schematics as required
  • Must be able to read and comply with work orders concerning service, modification, or installation of equipment
  • The ability to use a variety of power tools, hand tools, and meters safely

Education and Certification
  • HS Diploma or GED required; Associates or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field desired.
  • Universal HVAC Certification required
  • Universal Refrigerant License desired

Physical Requirements
The work environment, while generally hazard-free, may include some exposure to dust and varying temperatures. This position may require the individual to work both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. May require lifting up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Constant walking and standing for extended periods of time may be required. Reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, and balancing may be needed. Significant hand and finger dexterity is required, along with the ability to work in tight/confined spaces. In addition, the use of ladders may be required, which includes the ability to use/carry ladders, lift, and climb up to 30ft. in length.
