Job Summary

The Child Nutrition Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the food service activities at assigned locations. This position is responsible for cooking food items that meet mandated nutritional requirements, verifying quantities and specifications of orders, and maintaining facilities in a safe and sanitary condition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to convey and/or gather information required to perform job functions.
  • Clean and maintain utensils, equipment, storage, food preparation, and eating and serving areas to maintain required sanitary conditions.
  • Cook food, prepared and/or from scratch, and/or bake one or more food items to meet mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements.
  • Estimate food preparation amounts and adjust recipes, if required, to meet projected meal requirements and minimize waste of food items.
  • Evaluate prepared foods for flavor, appearance, and temperature to provide items that will be accepted by students and/or staff and meet nutritional guidelines.
  • Inspect food items to verify quantity, quality, and specifications of orders to meet preparation requirements and/or comply with mandated health standards.
  • Inventories food, condiments, and supplies to ensure availability of items required for meeting projected menu requirements.
  • Monitor kitchen and cafeteria areas to ensure a safe and sanitary working environment.
  • Perform functions of other nutritional services positions, as requested by the supervisor, to ensure adequate staff coverage within site nutritional services operations.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to maintain equipment in safe working order.
  • Serve one or more items of food to meet mandated nutritional requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel.
  • Stock food, condiments, and supplies to maintain adequate quantities and security of items.
  • Assist with loading and unloading delivery vans and transport food to assigned school sites to serve meals in a safe and sanitary condition.
