Position Summary:

The Corrections Nurse is responsible for delivering a wide range of nursing services within a correctional environment, demonstrating significant independent judgment. This role includes conducting health assessments of inmates, providing treatment or referrals as necessary, and managing the dispensing of medications under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate the medical needs and requirements of inmates.
  • Provide non-emergency medical assistance during daily sick calls; address requests for medical attention.
  • Conduct examinations of inmates as required; administer treatments.
  • Dispense medications and perform injections; collect laboratory specimens.
  • Coordinate inmate medical needs with healthcare providers; collaborate with them to assess and treat medical issues.
  • Maintain comprehensive medical records for each inmate.
  • Ensure the delivery of health services adheres to professional, legal, and agency standards.
  • Schedule appointments for non-emergency medical and dental care outside the correctional facility.
  • Address emergency medical situations for inmates; notify healthcare providers as necessary; contact local hospitals.
  • Assess the mental health status of inmates during daily sick calls or as required; refer to mental health professionals as needed.
  • Order medications and other necessary supplies.
  • Communicate with other institutions and medical personnel to ensure continuity of care for inmates; provide medical summaries upon request.
  • May encounter bloodborne pathogens in the course of duties.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
  • Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience relevant to the position will be considered.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Licensed as a Practical Nurse is required.
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Certification is mandatory.

Skills and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of professional nursing principles and practices.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Professional demeanor in a secured environment.
  • Flexibility to work various hours, including 12-hour shifts.
  • Ability to respond promptly to stress and medical emergencies with sound judgment.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with a diverse population.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports; proficient in both oral and written communication.
  • Physical demands of the role may require reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
  • Proficient in operating a computer and general office equipment.
  • Strong multitasking abilities, attention to detail, typing skills, and excellent computer proficiency.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexible hours/shifts; 12-hour shifts are required.
