Job Summary

This role is located within the State of Washington's Network Services Division, responsible for delivering data networking, internet, cloud connectivity, telephony, and network security services statewide to state agencies, federal entities, and other organizations.

About the Position

As a Network Design Engineer, you will be relied upon to research and determine viable options for state agencies to connect to the State of Washington's ecosystem to access centralized IT services, public cloud resources, and the internet.

  • Explore various ways for state agencies to connect to the State of Washington's ecosystem based on customer requirements, technical limitations, and approved decisions.
  • Determine the best approach for the customer and implement it within the manager's area of operations without escalating to senior technical staff.
  • Document the design solution reflecting how other networks connect to the State of Washington's Wide Area Network (WAN) into a graphical representation illustrating the various systems, endpoints, and traffic flows involved.
Responsibilities

Some of the key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Conduct fact-finding consults with agencies to gather business requirements and desired outcomes associated with customer requests.
  • Reconcile and memorialize viable connectivity plans into a graphical diagram to support decision-making considerations.
  • Identify the different hardware contained within an agency's Local Area Network (LAN) and graphically illustrate how each system component is connected.
Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in the IT field or an equivalent of eight years of IT experience.
  • Five years of experience in administering, engineering, and designing IT systems using both physical and virtual infrastructure, architecture, and technology.
  • Three years of consultative, administrative, or supervisory experience with virtual solutions.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be granted to applicants with:

  • A Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent technical degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid CISSP, CISM, or associate-level Cisco certification.
  • Broad experience in working with Virtual Networks within Microsoft Azure, Virtual Private Circuits within Amazon Web Services, and Virtual Machines within VMware.
