What Is the Opportunity?
The Bond and Specialty Insurance division at Travelers is looking to welcome a new member to our Commercial Surety team through our Underwriting Development Program. This role offers a chance to join a dedicated team of underwriters in a prominent and demanding position. Our Underwriting Professional Development Program (UPDP) equips participants with the skills needed for a successful career in a specialized sector of the insurance industry.
Commercial Surety provides various financial and performance guarantees across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, public utilities, technology, healthcare, financial institutions, and retail. The underwriting process starts with financial analysis and involves engagement with decision-makers from large multinational corporations to local businesses. The Commercial Surety UPDP allows underwriters to begin their careers with an industry leader. Key Responsibilities
- Collect and assess relevant information, including financial statements, to determine business risk acceptability.
- Establish and nurture relationships with agents, brokers, and clients to meet business objectives.
- Participate in extensive training to develop skills in underwriting, marketing, negotiation, and influencing agents and brokers for effective business management.
- Start building relationships with Travelers employees within the business unit and across the organization to create sales strategies.
- Willingness to travel for internal and external meetings with team members, agents, brokers, and clients.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Relevant professional experience.
- Proactive approach to tasks with a strong ability to learn about the industry, product lines, and internal systems.
- Effective verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Bachelor's degree or one year of relevant business experience.
- Health Insurance: Coverage for employees and eligible family members from the first day of employment.
- Retirement: Travelers matches 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar up to the first 5% of eligible pay, subject to an annual cap. Employees with student loan debt can participate in the Paying it Forward Savings Program, where Travelers contributes to their 401(k) when they make a payment toward their student loan. Additionally, a fully funded Pension Plan is available.
