Position Overview
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking an Aquatic Ecosystem Specialist to contribute to vital projects aimed at monitoring salmon populations within the Sacramento River Watershed. Under the guidance of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, this role encompasses leading specific initiatives, particularly those focused on salmon monitoring programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive data collection and analysis related to salmon populations.
  • Engage in technical writing and reporting to communicate findings effectively.
  • Participate actively in technical teams and collaborative working groups.
  • Present fisheries data to stakeholders and the public, ensuring transparency and understanding.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as fellow staff members.

This position plays a crucial role in a large-scale effort to estimate juvenile production for spring-run Chinook salmon, assisting in water operations management to mitigate impacts on aquatic species.

Working Conditions
  • Combination of office and fieldwork, with potential for computer use and participation in training sessions.
  • Occasional travel within the state, including overnight assignments.
  • Fieldwork may involve hiking in challenging terrains and working in diverse weather conditions.
  • A valid Class C driver's license is required, with experience in boat operation and four-wheel drive.
  • Safety gear, including wetsuits, is mandatory during field activities; state housing is not provided.

Special Requirements
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the state for field assignments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Competence in operating boats and working safely in and around water.
