The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for the meticulous execution of all diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures, ensuring compliance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's guidelines. This role also involves adherence to National Patient Safety Goals, depending on the level of patient interaction required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Order and prepare appropriate radiopharmaceuticals.
- Conduct advanced nuclear medicine procedures and utilize computer systems to process and analyze patient data for accurate exam results.
- Maintain comprehensive records to ensure departmental compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission standards.
- Document patient results accurately.
- Perform quality control checks on all nuclear medicine equipment, including cameras and dose calibrators.
- Apply complex mathematical formulas to calculate the decay of radiopharmaceuticals and their biological half-lives, as well as compound intricate drug kits.
- When assigned to the Mobile Nuclear Department, operate hospital vehicles to deliver services to rural facilities.
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist reports directly to the Lead Nuclear Technician and may encounter varied physical demands and respiratory fit test requirements. Daily exposure to low-level radiation from sealed sources and patient doses is expected, along with occasional exposure to higher radiation levels from therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. The role may also involve contact with patient bodily fluids and pathogens.
