The City of Starkville is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Reserve Police Officer to join our team. As a Reserve Police Officer, you will play a vital role in maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and preventing and suppressing crime in our community.
Key Responsibilities- Exercise authority in accordance with state laws, local ordinances, policies, and procedures.
- Assist all persons in need of police assistance.
- Observe, report, and act upon conditions conducive to crime and danger.
- Determine the nature of a call for service, investigate the circumstances, and take necessary action.
- Provide assistance to the public in emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Respond to emergency radio calls and assist with investigating accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, and other incidents.
- Detect and prevent crime through patrol.
- Prepare written and oral reports.
- Assist in the investigation of crimes, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects.
- Testify in court as needed.
- Maintain proficiency in the use of police-related equipment.
- Perform special assignments related to investigations, crime prevention, and traffic enforcement.
- High school diploma or equivalent from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Must be 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
- Pass a drug and background investigation.
- Complete an approved reserve officer academy or police academy.
- Volunteer a minimum of 10 hours per month.
- Hold a valid Driver's License and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Work may be performed in an office setting or in the field, and may require the operation of a vehicle during the course of the work day to conduct field operations, respond to emergency situations, or attend meetings in a variety of weather conditions and in emergency situations. Work exposes the employee to extreme heat/cold weather and life-threatening conditions. Protective equipment such as a bullet-proof vest, nightstick, and a weapon are worn.
While performing the duties of this job, the reserve officer is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The reserve officer is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls, or tools; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; run, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste, or smell. The reserve officer may be required to carry, drag, or restrain individuals from 50 to 300 pounds and lift in excess of 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Conditions present high stress and threat to personal safety during periods of search and seizure and arrest; may be exposed to toxic materials, blood-borne pathogens, and other infectious environments; have to deal with unruly or dangerous individuals, unsafe building sites, and deadly force; may be required to extend work schedule during emergency situations.
