Academic Support Specialist

Job Summary:

The Academic Support Specialist provides direct academic support services to students at the University of Tennessee. This includes coordinating, implementing, and evaluating services such as counseling and academic coaching to students in the assigned caseload. The specialist also develops and conducts seminars and workshops for bridge/pipeline programs, focusing on learning strategies and preparation for entrance exams and the health science curriculum.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creates individualized learning strategy enhancement plans for assigned students and monitors their progress.
  • Meets with students individually or in groups to provide academic coaching and success programming.
  • Assists in developing and implementing small group workshops on specific learning strategies.
  • Works with nursing faculty, administration, staff, and students to identify needs and develop solutions.
  • Tracks student usage of Academic Success and maintains confidential records.
  • Develops learning resource materials and activities specific to student needs.
  • Assists with the Campus-Wide Tutoring Program as needed.
  • Organizes effective outreach and awareness of Student Success services to the student population.
  • Supervises student interns or workers as requested.
  • Serves as part of an overall academic support team and performs other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in an academic setting, with a focus on learning, reading, and studying styles, tutorial services, career counseling, and/or retention program experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a broad range of people.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, with initiative in developing curricular plans for students.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in developing academic support services.

Work Schedule:

This position may occasionally require working evenings and weekends.
