Job Summary:

The Medical Examiner Investigator is a critical role within DeKalb County, responsible for conducting thorough investigations into deaths that occur within the county. This position requires a high level of expertise in forensic science, law enforcement, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive and review notifications of death from law enforcement agencies, hospitals, or other sources, and determine jurisdiction of death.
  • Conduct investigations into deaths that result from criminal, suspicious, or undetermined causes, and coordinate investigation activities with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Secure death scenes, examine bodies and scenes for clues and evidence, and collect, evaluate, and preserve evidence.
  • Conduct interviews with witnesses, law enforcement, medical personnel, and family members, and gather information regarding personal histories.
  • Document all investigative information, prepare detailed case reports and records, and generate investigative summaries.
  • Locate and notify next of kin, conduct research, and advise family of death.
  • Perform customer service functions, provide information or assistance regarding department services, and respond to routine questions and complaints.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of law enforcement experience.
  • Valid Georgia driver's license.
  • Basic Law Enforcement certification.
