Job Summary

The Salvation Army Central Territory is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Executive Director of Advancement to lead our Development Department. This is a key leadership role that requires a strong track record of fundraising, marketing, and community relations experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, direction, and management oversight for the development, communications, and volunteer services functions for the Central Territory.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of strategic, long-term, and operational plans for all areas of fundraising, marketing, and community relations in partnership with divisional leadership.
  • Serve as a member of the Divisional Finance Board and Advisory Board and as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission in the broader constituency within and outside the organization.
  • Facilitate education and communications with the Division regarding development and communications activities, including utilizing the support and expertise of volunteers.
  • Provide fundraising/public relations counsel to divisional corps officers, department leaders, and appropriate others regarding capital and annual campaigns, feasibility studies, board development, special events, direct mail, strategic planning, and donor relations, including cultivation and recognition activities.
  • Plan and direct fundraising initiatives within the division/region in collaboration with the Divisional Commander, Advisory Board, and other Territorial leaders to meet or exceed the division's financial, marketing, resources development, and communications objectives.
  • Develop and acquire research data, through surveys and feasibility studies, which provides directional guidance for fundraising initiatives within the Division.
  • Manage the budget for the Development department for the Central Territory, including approving expense reports within the department.
  • Train and engage Advisory Board members so they can be effective participants in fundraising and communications within their respective communities.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to development staff; provide a clear vision, effective communications, and leadership to create a team environment dedicated to the objectives of the department and the Central Territory.
  • Work with development department heads and THQ leadership to develop measurable metrics to drive and evaluate desired performance.
  • Function as the divisional liaison to THQ leadership and staff for all areas related to Development, Community Relations, Capital Campaigns, and National Corporate Campaign initiatives.
  • Serve as the point person and subject matter expert for all matters pertaining to Development for the Central Territory and an effective spokesperson for The Salvation Army locally and divisionally.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports for fundraising results for the Central Territory.
  • Monitor and review progress on Development goals with department leaders in the Central Territory; meet regularly with Development staff to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Prepare and provide timely and constructive feedback, coaching, and direction to help assure each Development department leader meets or exceeds their performance goals and expectations.
  • Work with direct reports to identify and address individual as well as departmental development needs; provide for and encourage professional development and training as needed.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews with each Development department leader, including administrative staff as appropriate; document performance, including areas for improvement; share and discuss review with each direct report.
  • Assist in identifying, recruiting, and selecting qualified development staff in the Central Territory.
  • Foster and maintain a small portfolio of major donors (e.g., Advisory Board members) and prospects for major and planned gifts within the Central Territory/Region.
  • Prepare annual budgets for the Central Territory's entire Development Department; oversee preparation of annual budgets for each area of Development; regularly monitor actuals versus planned budget revenues.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in non-profit management, fund development, marketing, business administration, public relations, or other related fields; advanced degree is desirable.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge and abilities to successfully lead and manage a Development Department and its staff to effectively engage in fundraising activities at a Divisional level may be considered.
  • Postgraduate courses in fundraising and management skills, such as planning, goal setting, leadership, community, are preferred.
  • A minimum of five or more years of successful Development and supervisory experience in a key leadership role in a non-profit, charitable organization, preferably a faith-based organization, including fundraising areas such as major gifts, planned giving, capital campaigns, direct mail, and government/foundation grants.
  • Advanced Development credentials, recognition, or achievements are expected; Association of Fundraising Executives (AFE) Certification or Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) is preferred.
  • Experience, familiarity, and/or ability to work in a complex non-profit organization with many departments, programs, and fundraising priorities.

  • Thinks strategically to identify future needs/opportunities and can develop long-range plans to address them while balancing day-to-day executive and implementation needs.
  • Ability to train and develop others, using coaching and other instructional techniques.
  • As a leader and team player, behaves and communicates in a manner that fosters good team relationships, coordination, and collaboration within and across groups in Development, the Central Territory, and THQ.
  • Readily grasps financial information and details important to both operating and capital budgets; utilizes financial acumen to manage costs and achieve fundraising goals for Development and the Central Territory.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions, with or without input from others, in alignment with the Central Territory's and THQ's strategic goals and objectives.
  • Excellent reasoning and problem-solving skills; ability to identify, define, and solve complex problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
