Overview
This job posting is intended for the recruitment of both Cadet (non-certified) and Deputy Sheriff (certified) roles. Depending on your qualifications, application details, and responses to application inquiries, you will be assigned to the appropriate classification and salary level.
STARTING SALARY: Cadet I: $19.40/hour ($40,360 annual)
Cadet II: $21.82/hour ($45,384 annual)
Recruit: $23.00/hour ($47,830 annual)
Deputy Sheriff: $ /hour ($50,494-60,611 annual)
CADET I/II:
Under general oversight, the Cadet role is designed to prepare non-certified candidates for a career in law enforcement. While in Cadet I/Cadet II status, candidates will engage in formal and in-house training. The activities are specifically tailored to educate and integrate the individual into the law enforcement field.
The selected candidate will agree to undertake tasks as assigned by the Administration Officer in Charge or their representative.
The primary goal of the Cadet I or Cadet II position is to progress to a level where the individual may be selected to attend the Law Enforcement Academy, subject to eligibility (at the discretion of the agency, minimum age of 21). Candidates at this stage would advance to the Recruit level at a starting salary of $23.00/hour ($47,830 annual). If chosen to attend the Law Enforcement Academy, the candidate will be employed full-time during their training. The agency will provide necessary training, equipment, and the state exam fee, contingent upon the candidate signing a 2-year employment contract to serve as a full-time Deputy Sheriff upon successful completion of the State Officer Certification Exam.
DEPUTY SHERIFF:
This classification is responsible for executing crime prevention and investigative tasks.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A FLORIDA BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY (OR EQUIVALENT TRAINING PROGRAM) AND PASSING OF THE FLORIDA STATE OFFICER CERTIFICATION EXAM.
Examples of Responsibilities
CADET I/II:
- Enforce parking regulations and violations, including issuing citations. (Cadets must complete a training course for Parking Enforcement Specialist as approved by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission).
- Assist the Investigations Division with evidence collection and processing.
- Provide clerical support as needed within the Sheriff's Office.
- Offer manpower assistance to the Sheriff's Office Training Unit.
- Participate in regular law enforcement training sessions.
- Represent the agency at various functions.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
- Attend classes, lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises.
- Engage in on-the-job training by performing routine assignments in the designated functional area.
- Fulfill other duties of a similar nature or level in a classroom environment.
- Respond to service calls or complaints from the public.
- Patrol designated areas to enforce local, state, and federal laws, including traffic regulations.
- Participate in crime investigations, which involve evidence collection, witness and suspect interviews, and securing crime scenes.
- Prepare detailed and accurate reports, records, statistics, and logs of daily activities.
- Provide emergency assistance at accidents and other critical incidents.
- Serve civil and criminal warrants and other legal processes in accordance with established civil process rules; apprehend suspects and make arrests.
- Transport suspects and other individuals to appropriate facilities.
- Attend court proceedings to testify in trials and participate in depositions.
- May be assigned to various units (Investigations, Forfeitures, Training, Court Security, etc.) requiring specific job duties.
- Perform other related duties as necessary.
All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered minimally qualified:
- Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent G.E.D.
- Be a United States Citizen.
- Hold a valid driver's license at the time of application and meet driving history requirements.
- Must have had no illegal drug use within the past twelve months.
- Must pass a polygraph, background investigation, drug screening, medical evaluation, and psychological assessment.
- Associate's degree or higher, or
- Military veteran with an HONORABLE discharge or a current member of any reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard with a minimum of two (2) years of experience, or
- Certified Corrections officer with a minimum of two (2) years of experience, or
- Out-of-state Law Enforcement officer with a minimum of two (2) years of experience.
Completion of a Florida basic training program for Law Enforcement approved by the CJSTC and passing the Florida state officer certification examination.
Physical Agility Test Requirements:
Applicants will be required to successfully complete a Physical Agility Test (P.A.T.) at the beginning of the pre-employment process. The P.A.T. is conducted on a monthly basis. Candidates are allowed three (3) attempts within a calendar year to pass.
A Physician's Clearance Form will be required for participation.
The P.A.T. is a timed, continuous flow assessment measuring physical condition and aerobic capacity. This course must be completed in under 6 minutes and 4 seconds (6:04). The tasks associated with this test measure specific physical abilities, including:
- exiting a vehicle/opening a trunk
- running 220 yards
- completing an obstacle course
- dragging a 150-pound dummy
- repeating the obstacle course
- running 220 yards
- dry firing a weapon six (6) times with each hand
- placing items in and closing trunk/entering a vehicle
Licensing Requirements (for Deputy Sheriff):
CJSTC certification
FDLE certification
Knowledge (position requirements at entry for Deputy Sheriff):
Basic investigative techniques and procedures.
Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes.
Rules of civil process and related statutes.
CPR.
Firearms operations.
Recordkeeping procedures.
Skills (position requirements at entry for Deputy Sheriff):
Charging suspects with violations.
Interviewing witnesses and suspects.
Tracking chain of custody related to evidence.
Maintaining records and logs.
Serving civil processes.
Utilizing firearms.
Preparing and maintaining activity reports, logs, and related documentation.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.

Physical Requirements:

Very Heavy Work:
Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
