Job Summary

Under the limited direction of the attending physician or designee, the Nurse Practitioner will obtain and record patient medical histories, perform physical examinations, order, evaluate, and monitor medical and laboratory diagnostic tests and treatment plans. The successful candidate will prepare, develop, and initiate treatment plans in consultation with the attending physician, perform routine invasive procedures, and educate and counsel patients and family members on condition, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery, and other related areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Obtain and record complete medical histories and exams of patients in the electronic medical record.
  2. Order, evaluate, and monitor medical and laboratory diagnostic tests and treatment plans, including laboratory tests, x-rays, pharmaceuticals, blood products, and interdisciplinary consults in collaboration with the attending physician or designee and according to established guidelines.
  3. Prepare, develop, and initiate treatment plans in consultation with the attending physician and per standing orders.
  4. Develop outpatient care and write medication and other orders as prescribed by law.
  5. Perform diagnostic testing, including provider-performed clinical microscopy and point-of-service testing after being trained and approved through personal competency testing by the laboratory technical supervisor.
  6. Participate in laboratory quality assurance with semiannual competency testing on provider-performed microscopy and other tests for which the NP is approved.
  7. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures based on training, certification, and clinic protocols.
  8. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  9. Educate and counsel patients and family members, and accompanying exposed individuals on condition, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery, and other related areas.
  10. Provide clinical supervision of STD clinic RNs who also perform limited histories, exams, collection of specimens for laboratory testing, and who provide treatment per standing orders.
  11. Responsible for a variety of patient care activities in assigned outpatient clinic, including performing genital, anal, and pelvic exams, collecting specimens for STD testing, working with Disease Intervention Specialists regarding partner services, coordinating with on-site Prevention Counselors, coordinating with ID/HIV clinic staff regarding linkage of HIV patients to care, and implementing expedited partner therapy and partner-delivered therapy per policy.
  12. Responsible for initiating patients and monitoring patients on PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and nPEP (non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis).
  13. Works with PrEP navigator regarding any insurance or medication issues regarding PrEP or nPEP.
  14. Works in collaboration with the attending physician in evaluating, managing, and initiating anti-retroviral medication on newly diagnosed patients with HIV that are seen in the STD clinic.
  15. May be involved in providing reproductive health services, including family planning, contraception, HPV vaccinations, and other services.
  16. Responds to emergencies and initiates appropriate treatment until relieved of their duties by a physician or emergency personnel.
  17. Works assigned hours that will include clinic sessions outside of normal work hours, such as an early evening clinic. May have extended hours on certain days due to urgent patient needs.
  18. Works with clinic staff based on established workflows and collaboratively problem-solves to meet clinic, client, and public health needs.
  19. May participate in clinical research.
  20. Maintains and enhances expertise through appropriate educational and organizational activities.
  21. Performs related duties as assigned.
Education, Licensure/Certification, and Training

Graduate of an accredited Acute Care, Adult Primary Care, or Family Nurse Practitioner program, with ANCC or AANP certification. Must possess an unrestricted license to practice in the State of Michigan, including Registered Nurse and Nurse Prescriber authorization, and an unrestricted DEA registration. Active BCLS certification is required, with supervisory experience and ACLS preferred. Knowledge of OSHA, MIOSHA, JACHO, and HIPAA regulations is essential.

High level of interpersonal skills, written and verbal, necessary to effectively communicate, establish, and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the Department and/or practice. Excellent analytical ability necessary to independently identify and resolve extremely complex and unusual problems or discrepancies. Clinical knowledge to meet the medical requirements relating to various procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patients, personnel, and/or financial management. Analytical ability to monitor data, develop treatment plans, and prescribe judgment to monitor and respond to changes in patient conditions. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to promote disease prevention and control. Ability to provide clinical supervision of STD clinic RNs. Ability to work comfortably with a diverse patient population and to provide counseling on safer sex in a client-centered and non-judgmental manner.

Working Conditions/Schedules

4 half-day clinic sessions per week, part-time position. Hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the department. May require on-call duty and the ability to work outside of scheduled work hours when the need arises.
