Position Overview: The Director of Engineering is accountable for establishing Contract Requirements associated with all acquired Ship Design and Build Projects, as well as Conversions and Repair projects. This role is critical in supporting the workforce engaged in significant heavy manufacturing activities at our expansive facility. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in defining the necessary departmental resources to fulfill commitments, coordinating personnel to achieve objectives, and taking on various high-level responsibilities within the department, including bid and proposal development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote and adhere to the Safety Policy.
- Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.
- Determine resource needs to support business objectives.
- Develop, modify, and measure departmental capabilities to align with business goals.
- Implement and oversee training programs for the engineering team.
- Establish and maintain standard operating procedures within the department.
- Lead initiatives focused on continuous improvement.
- Provide mentorship to direct reports.
- Manage the hiring and termination processes for employees.
- Facilitate meetings with engineering staff and other departments to support business objectives.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and engineering subcontractors.
- Report departmental performance metrics to senior management.
- Collaborate with all departments to ensure engineering deliverables meet production needs.
- Manage departmental overhead budgets.
- Participate in the development of bids and proposals.
- Oversee the coordination and integration of technical activities in engineering projects.
- Review and approve project design modifications.
- Present proposals and findings to clients.
- Consult with clients to define project specifications.
- Demonstrate a commitment to Quality and Environmental, Health & Safety Policies.
Supervisory Duties: Directly supervises a team of 5 to 40 employees and oversees subcontract engineering performance. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, as well as performance appraisals and conflict resolution. The role requires a commitment to mentorship and leadership that aligns with the company's mission and values.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree with 10-20 years of relevant experience, or a 4-Year Degree with 15-25 years of experience, or a 2-Year Degree with 20+ years of experience.
- Proven ability to manage a large departmental workforce effectively.
- 15 years of supervisory experience.
- Intermediate proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software.
- Current skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Desired Qualifications:
- Additional supervisory or management certifications.
- Demonstrated technological skills through relevant work experience or publications.
- Experience with Six Sigma or LEAN methodologies is preferred.
