Position Overview

MedStar Health is seeking a Lead Radiation Therapy Specialist to oversee operations at our radiation oncology facility.

As the Lead Radiation Therapy Specialist, you will manage the daily technical functions of the radiation oncology department. You will supervise the team of radiation therapists, collaborating with physicians and administrative staff to ensure efficient operations and timely patient care. You will also assist the Technical Director in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures to meet departmental and organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain comprehensive records of simulation, treatment delivery, and billing processes. Ensure proficiency with EMR and IGRT systems. Keep treatment and simulation rooms well-stocked and organized. Report and document any equipment malfunctions. Directly oversee the radiation therapy team and engage with physicians, technical directors, physicists, and dosimetrists to implement new protocols and technologies. Ensure compliance with all RadAmerica Technical and EMR policies and verify the accuracy of patient billing for therapy and simulation services.
  • Promote quality improvement initiatives. Collaborate with the Technical Director to gather data for annual studies, participate in the recruitment process, and evaluate staff performance. Conduct preliminary evaluations and develop processes to enhance workflow efficiency. Actively engage in quality assurance procedures and ensure the completion of weekly chart reviews. Perform dose verification in accordance with established protocols and document findings. Assign weekly chart rounds for all patients and verify and record SSDs. Capture necessary portal images for all patients and conduct monthly technical peer reviews and recaps. Report any issues with QA or equipment to the physicist and clinical engineers, and maintain accurate logs of equipment problems. Provide regular reports to the department and submit them to the Technical Director. Manage the scheduling of all simulation and treatment appointments and provide patients with their initial treatment calendar.
  • Operate the CT simulator and related equipment. Carry out Ultrasound, HDR, and Mold Room responsibilities. Maintain credentialing for catheterizations, urethrograms, and contrast procedures. Consistently perform Time Out procedures and inform patients about what to expect during their treatments. Fabricate immobilization devices and ensure all necessary documentation is completed and signed prior to procedures. Utilize the EMR policy and procedure manual effectively.
  • Notify physicians of any canceled appointments and document these in the EMR system. Collaborate with physicians, physicists, and technical directors to implement new policies and technologies. Communicate effectively with the technical director regarding staff concerns. Complete all necessary documentation for students and visitors and forward to the technical director. Conduct evaluations for student clinical placements and oversee orientation and training for new staff. Ensure that therapists possess the required skills for their daily tasks.
  • Operate linear accelerators and administer radiation therapy treatments in accordance with safety guidelines. Provide ongoing patient education, reinforcing physician recommendations regarding skin care, diet, treatment side effects, and expected reactions. Educate patients on what to anticipate during their daily treatments. Perform hand calculations and RadCalc dose verifications.
Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in Radiation Therapy Technology or graduation from an accredited Radiation Therapy program.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive clinical experience.
  • ARRT Certification required.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Maryland Board of Physicians License with the letter prefix 'O' or 'M' as a Radiation Therapist and/or Radiographer.
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred.
