Job Overview
This role functions as an entry-level automotive repair technician responsible for the upkeep and servicing of gasoline and diesel-powered machinery. The work schedule may be adjusted based on the community's transportation service needs, influencing the frequency of vehicle maintenance. This position encompasses the maintenance of all municipal vehicles, not limited to transit options.
Safety Notice
This position is classified as safety-sensitive and adheres to a strict drug testing policy, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident testing for prohibited substances.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct repairs on hydraulic systems, including the replacement of hoses, pistons, seals, and pumps.
- Service various brake systems on light to heavy-duty vehicles, including the replacement of worn brake components.
- Perform basic welding and fabrication tasks, including repairs on bumpers and construction equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical issues to determine the most cost-effective repair methods using existing parts and tools.
- Execute maintenance and repairs on both gasoline and diesel engines.
- Repair gearboxes on heavy machinery, replacing necessary components.
- Respond to service calls for on-site repairs or towing as needed.
- Conduct major tune-ups for a diverse range of equipment.
- Provide detailed reports to the supervising mechanic and department head.
- Assist other departments with maintenance tasks as directed.
- Operate various shop equipment, including hydraulic machines and diagnostic tools.
- Perform basic electrical repairs as required.
- Utilize shop power tools safely and effectively.
- Maintain cleanliness of city vehicles when instructed.
- Work under the guidance of a certified mechanic.
- Support team members in their tasks as needed.
- Collaborate with supervisors to manage vehicle maintenance schedules effectively.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One year of specialized training in automotive and diesel engines.
- Two years of practical experience in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance.
- Six months of training in hydraulic systems.
- One year of experience in automotive electrical repairs and diagnostics.
- Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License required.
Knowledge of:
- Gasoline and diesel engines, automotive air conditioning, hydraulic systems, and braking systems.
- Safe operation of small machinery and hand tools.
- Work independently while adhering to safety protocols and regulations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to perform moderately heavy work, including lifting items up to 100 pounds.
- Regular attendance is crucial for service continuity.
- Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with regulations.
- Work is primarily indoors with exposure to various weather conditions.
- Potential exposure to hazardous materials and heavy machinery.
- Use of personal protective equipment is mandatory.
