Job Summary

This position is located in the California State Office within the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and assists the State Conservation Engineer.

Responsibilities
  • Performing professional engineering and scientific work involving hydraulics and hydrology.
  • Assisting the state engineer with providing technical guidance and overall planning, installation, and maintenance of the engineering phases of conservation practices.
  • Conducting hydraulic and hydrologic investigations of storage and operation requirements for all purposes within the Small Watershed Programs.
  • Preparing and/or reviewing Area and Field Office designs for complex agricultural engineering practices for various water resources-related projects.
  • Directing and coordinating field examinations of hydraulic and hydrologic problems, determining potential solutions, and organizing data collection.
  • Initiating, coordinating, and conducting hydraulic and hydrologic studies in planning investigations of systems and individual projects.
  • Relating proposed solutions to meet needs or alleviate problems.
  • Coordinating the activities of and the requirements for the national and state dam safety and rehabilitation programs.
  • Reporting findings and making recommendations regarding the Dam Safety Program to the State Conservation Engineer.
  • Providing technical guidance and training to Area and Field Staff on H and H studies and H and H engineering-related tools.
Requirements
  • Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.
  • Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience, and/or education.
  • Basic Education Requirement: A degree in engineering or a related field, with a minimum of one program accredited by ABET.
  • Minimum Qualifications: At least one or more full-time years of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, performing duties such as developing technical data, assisting with water management coordination plans, and conducting site investigations.
